Phew! What a year it’s been. HR is a rollercoaster ride at the best of times, and the last 12 months have been no exception. We’ve rolled up our sleeves, jumped in with both feet and helped our amazing clients navigate everything from hiring surges to employee challenges. Employee Relations: The Elephant in the Room
Ah, Employee Relations—the not-so-glamorous but oh-so-crucial side of HR & People. This year, it’s been the biggest slice of the pie for us. November and December 2023 were absolutely buzzing with activity here. (What is it about the holidays that brings out the drama in the office?) Disputes, performance reviews, and year-end tensions hit their peak, and we were on hand to smooth the bumps and keep the wheels turning.
As the festive tinsel came down, things quietened in January, but the undercurrent of Employee Relations ticked along all year. Let’s face it, keeping workplaces harmonious is no small feat, but when you get it right, it’s magic.
Recruiting: The Great Talent Hunt
If there was one theme for summer 2024, it was recruiting, recruiting, recruiting! After a quiet start to the year, the demand for talent exploded in June and July, with businesses ramping up their hiring drives.
We were knee-deep in job descriptions, interview plans, and onboarding strategies, helping our clients build their dream teams. It’s always exciting to see businesses grow, and it’s a privilege to play a part in shaping their future.
Disciplinary & Grievances: When Things Get Messy
We’ve all been there: workplace hiccups that need a steady hand and a calm head. This year, Disciplinary & Grievances kept us busy with a steady drumbeat of activity. Peaks popped up here and there, especially when teams faced big shifts or the odd leadership shake-up.
What we love about this work (yes, love!) is knowing that we’re helping businesses navigate tricky waters with empathy and professionalism. Nobody enjoys these situations, but when handled well, they can be a turning point for teams and individuals alike.
Training & Development: Investing in People
Training has always been a personal favourite of ours, and this year was no different. It’s not flashy, it’s not spiky, but it’s steady, solid, and so important. From leadership coaching to upskilling teams, we’ve been delighted to see so many businesses put their people first.
And January? A perfect time to do it. Things are quieter, people are reflective, and investing in development is the ideal way to kickstart the year.
Contracts/Handbooks/Policies: The Boring But Brilliant Basics
If there’s one thing we’re sticklers for, it’s getting the foundations right. And let me tell you, Contracts/Handbooks/Policies work might not win HR’s “Most Glamorous Task” award, but it’s the backbone of a well-oiled organisation.
At the start of the year, our inboxes were brimming with updates, tweaks, and reviews. By mid-year, this area eased off, giving our clients space to focus on embedding those shiny new policies.
The Bigger Picture
So, what’s the takeaway from the past year? Three things stand out for us:

Seasonality is real: Employee Relations peaks around the holidays, Recruiting takes off in summer, and there’s always a January lull. Knowing this helps us (and you) plan ahead.

Every business is unique: Whether it’s hiring 10 new team members or dealing with that one difficult conversation, no two days—or clients—are ever the same.

People are at the heart of everything: The numbers tell a story, but the real magic is in the relationships we build and the problems we solve together.
